Southeast Alaska Salmon Purse Seine Fishery Announcement

The Southeast Alaska salmon purse seine fishery will open from 6:00 a.m. Friday, August 14, through 9:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2026, in Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (Section 6-E only), 7 (Section 7-B only), and 9 (Section 9-B only). Section 6-D is closed. Numerous specific area closures and boundary restrictions apply across these districts, including specific nautical mile (nmi) buffers and latitude/longitude coordinates for inlets and bays. Fishermen must adhere to the defined markers and closures for each section, such as the 1.0 nmi closure along the Cleveland Peninsula in District 2 and the 0.25 nmi buffer along the Dall Island shore in Section 3-A.

Prince William Sound Salmon Fishery Announcement #33

The Copper River and Bering River Districts open for 24-hour drift gillnet periods starting at 7:00 am on Thursday, August 13. The Main Bay Subdistrict (Eshamy District) opens for a 24-hour gillnet period at 8:00 am on Thursday, August 13, with the AGZ restricted to set gillnet permit holders only. Additionally, portions of the Eastern and Northern Districts open to purse seine fishing for 12 hours, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, on Thursday, August 13. Key data and status updates include: * **Copper River/Bering River:** Cumulative commercial harvest is 4,250 Chinook and 243,000 sockeye salmon. Copper River Delta survey count is 37,569 sockeye (range 32,568–76,979); Bering River survey count is 5,520 sockeye (below range 8,409–18,499). * **Eshamy District:** Weir count is 2,395 sockeye (target 5,405–11,641). Recent harvest estimates include 12,114 coho and 819 sockeye from the August 10 period. * **Hatchery/Other:** VFDA has collected 16% of its 270 million pink salmon egg goal. August 11 harvest was 624,000 pink salmon. PWSAC hatchery subdistricts (AFK, CCH, WNH) remain closed for broodstock. Section 1-B Drift Gillnet Fishery Extension Announcement

The Section 1-B drift gillnet fishery is extended for 24 hours and will now close at 12:00 noon on Friday, August 14, 2026. Pearse and Portland Canals are closed north of the latitude of Akeku Point at 54°50.03′ N lat. This extension is granted under the District 1 Pink Salmon Management Plan (5 AAC 33.360) because the purse seine fleet is fishing at least three days in statistical week 33. Emergency Order 1S6026 is in effect.

Kodiak Commercial Salmon Fishery Advisory Announcement # 33

Commercial salmon fishing is extended by 48 hours in the Alitak District (Cape Alitak, Humpy-Deadman, Alitak Bay, Moser Bay, and Olga Bay Sections), Eastside Kodiak District (Seven Rivers, Two-Headed, and Sitkalidak Sections), Northeast Kodiak District, and Afognak District (Northwest and Southeast Afognak Sections) until 9:00 p.m. Friday, August 14. The Spiridon Bay Special Harvest Area (Telrod Cove) closes at 9:00 p.m. Thursday, August 13, alongside the Southwest Kodiak District (Outer Karluk, Outer Ayakulik, Halibut Bay, and Sturgeon Sections), Northwest Kodiak District, and Southwest Afognak Section. Purse seine gear may not retain Chinook salmon 28 inches or greater in length; these must be returned to the water unharmed. Cost recovery fisheries are currently underway in the Kitoi Bay Special Harvest Area, with future openings in Duck Bay, Izhut Bay, Inner Kitoi Bay, and Outer Kitoi Bay dependent on KRAA cost recovery needs.
